Ain’t higher education wonderful?

Some 80,000 fewer low-income students won’t get higher-education study grants this year because of deceased federal spending.

Astronomical tuition increases at state colleges and universities are guaranteeing even higher long-term debts for most students.

And yet, those same colleges and universities are spending billions of dollars for activities outside their academic programs.

For example: a $200-million football stadium, a $4-million weight room with rare-wood décor, a $500,000 flat-panel video display for the athletic center.

Oh yes, the $28-million indoor practice field, $800,000 for new turf, a $100-million basketball arena.

And $3.2 million to renovate a locker room into a two-story atrium with Internet hookups in each player’s private dressing area.

All so two per cent of the campus jocks will be able to earn millions of dollars as professional athletes. (17 AUGUST 2003)
