Flight crews, passengers and luggage must go through security checkpoints—but airport employes don’t.

Correct. Many airports allow employes to gain entry to secured areas simply by using special identification cards and access codes.

No x-rays, scanners, screeners, metal detectors or residue swabs at employe access points. Not even security officers to check photo IDs.

Defensive airport managers cite the rigorous background checks employes get before they’re hired.

But what would prevent an armed terrorist wrapped in plastic explosives from hijacking an airline mechanic or janitor and getting his uniform, ID and entry codes?

Not a damned thing.

Homeland security efforts lull the public, but not the terrorists. (2 NOVEMBER 2003)
