Adolph Hitler cowered in an underground Berlin bunker before Germany surrendered during World War II.
After the Taliban regime’s defeat, Osama bin Laden hid in deep mountain caves of eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan.
And Saddam Hussein spent his last moments of freedom wedged in a shallow pit in northern Iraq.
References to vermin aside, mass murderers must have genetic predispositions to plunge underground when threatened.
