America learned this week why civilians need personal assault weapons: Dangerous women and children lurk in daycare centers.

During a few horrific seconds, an Uzi with folding stock was used to spray 70 or so rounds of 9mm ammunition and wound two adults and three young boys.

The National Rifle Assn. maintains the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right of Americans to bear war-surplus arms and other weapons of mass destruction for self defense, hunting and target practice.

Clearly, the daycare shooter believed he was protecting himself from Jews. was hunting Jews and was using Jews for target practice. The NRA should be proud.

Given today's climate for unprovoked violence, no rational person would argue against the right of properly vetted persons to own revolvers, semiautomatic pistols, rifles and shotguns for self defense, hunting or target practice. But who the hell needs assault weapons?

Submachine guns were outlawed for civilian use earlier this century after gangsters made them their weapons of choice. The same restrictions should be applied today to any semiautomatic weapon that can utilize excessive firepower.

Unless federal and state lawmakers act soon, the NRA's anal embrace of "militia" mentality will foster civilian ownership-- and use-- of grenades, landmines, bazookas, cannons, flamethrowers and missile launchers.

Ban all assault weapons.(15 AUGUST 1999)
