American traffic fatalities continue to rise despite billions of dollars spent on airbags and other required safety devices.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rollovers are the top killers in accidents involving the allegedly “safer” sports utility vehicles.

NHTSA plans to propose requiring manufacturers to make design changes preventing roofs from collapsing too much when rollovers occur.

Hey, what about just requiring all vehicles to have roll bars or other strong roof supports? And making the requirement retroactive for all licensed vehicles.

Convertibles, once absent from the marketplace because of such safety concerns, are now common again.

And also common again are traces of human remains ground into the pavement after rollover accidents involving convertibles. (30 MAY 2004)
