Everyone knows ultraviolet radiation damages skin and causes cancer.

Well, almost everyone.

To combat those dangers, America’s Environmental Protection Agency has adopted a new and improved Global Ultraviolet Index as precautionary guidelines.

EPA spokespersons say “the new index is a quick and easy way for people to know when it’s important to use sunscreen and avoid too much sun.”

Fine and dandy. But how about cracking down on the No. 1 carcinogens: tanning salons whose clients believe the only dangers they face are premature wrinkles?

Even so-called health spas and fitness centers have unregulated tanning booths.

Just wheredid sun worshipers get the notion that darker skin is socially preferable? Certainly not from minorities whose natural deeper hues translate into increased traffic stops. (6 JUNE 2004)
