Just when you believed it was safe to visit your friendly neighborhood supermarket.
This warning/recall notice has been issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:
Watch out for defrost heaters ejecting explosively from wide-island frozen-food cases.
Don’t laugh. One leg was broken recently when a shopper was struck while reaching for a package of broccoli.
The feds don’t suspect terrorism. The culprit is moisture building up pressure inside the heaters, sold since the mid-1970s by a Texas division of Carrier Inc.
Meanwhile, CPSC says consumers should “stop using the recalled product immediately.”
What, buy only fresh foods? (27 JUNE 2004)
