Some consumers give new meaning to the term “dumbbell.”

Seems a few purchasers of chrome dumbbells neglected to tightly secure the 2- to 50-pound weights to their handles.

The consequences, reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, were bruises and broken noses and toes to five human dumbbells.

Now some l.1 million of the Reebok and NordicTrack sets--sold between June 2000 and May 2004 by sporting-goods dealers--have been recalled voluntarily.

Naturally, the manufacturer is based in China, which exports shoddy products that frequently main or kill unsuspecting Americans. (25 JULY 2004)
