Silly string soon may join the list of everyday items banned, restricted or controlled by laws because of unintended consequences.

The compressed foam, ejected in streams from cans, long has been a staple for pranksters at celebrations.

String battles, however, sometimes lead to disorderly public conduct and damage to buildings, trees and ocean life.

Already restricted or controlled are glue used for sniffing, spray paint used for graffiti, nostrums used for manufacturing meth, fertilizer used for making bombs and fireworks used for demolishing mailboxes.

Next on the list of banned, restricted or controlled items are toilet paper—used to decorate trees, lawns and houses—and eggs, used to peel paint on vehicles. (15 AUGUST 2004)
