Why the silly debate about Congress continuing the national ban on assault weapons?

The ban, implemented during the Clinton era, will expire next Monday unless the U.S. House of Representatives and Dubya bite the bullet. (The U.S. Senate on March 2 voted to retain the ban.)

Dubya and other office holders obviously don’t want to alienate the National Rifle Assn., which vehemently opposes the ban and its continuation.

Assault weapons aren’t used for hunting or target practice. They aren’t used for self defense.

Assault weapons, easily converted to machine-gun capability, accommodate large magazines of ammunition.

Assault weapons are designed—and frequently used---only for mass murder and mayhem.

Law-enforcement officers and innocent bystanders are routinely killed and wounded by the illegal weapons.

Don’t let this clip hit the floor. (12 SEPTEMBER 2004)
