Oh yeah? What if some Americans don’t want digital television sets?

Seems that in just two years—2006--television broadcasts will cease transmitting analog signals—sending millions of TVs and TV-VCR-DVD combos to neighborhood dumps and recycling centers.

The Federal Communications Commission plans to pull the plug when 85 percent of American households own digital sets or digital converters. Only 10 percent now own either of those pricey gizmos.

Now starting at $500 and $120, respectively, the items actually will cost viewers much more because few households have just one set.

What about continuing simultaneous analog and digital transmissions while encouraging or forcing TV manufacturers to stop making and marketing analog sets?

Considering the current reality nonsense now being aired as universal entertainment, many viewers may well return to books and crosswords rather than make the expensive switch. (31 OCTOBER 2004)
