Tuesday’s presidential election revealed what American voters really care about: cultural, social and moral values.

Translate that to mean school prayers, faith-based litmus tests, tax cuts for the rich, homophobia, religious monuments on private property, unfettered capitalism, overturning Roe vs. Wade and—yes—creationism, apple pie and stockcars.

What America’s heartland apparently doesn’t care about:

Outsourced jobs, rising under- and unemployment, affordable healthcare, reducing prescription costs, Social Security solvency, hunger, poverty, offshore incorporating to avoid federal and state taxes, homelessness, corporate crimes, no-bid contracts, separation of church and state, embryonic stem cell research, medical marijuana, adequate numbers and equipment for armed forces in battle, illegal aliens, Middle East poppy fields and--least of all-- devoting limited military resources to finding Osama bin Laden and the rest of his international henchmen.

Is this a great country, or what? (7 NOVEMBER 2004)
