Just when you thought your streets were marginally safe, another monumental hazard merges: pocket bikes.

Those miniaturized gas-powered motorcycles were the hottest-selling “toy” this past holiday season, capable of propelling youngsters at speeds up to 40 miles per hour.

And their mufflerless noise makes a buzz saw or leaf blower pale by comparison.

Not only are pocket bikes unlicensed and illegal for use on public property, they lack lights, mirrors, turn signals and helmet requirements.

They join gas- and electric-powered scooters and the Segway Human Transporter as the latest assault on legitimate foot and vehicular traffic.

Don’t expect relief anytime soon . Law-enforcement officers don’t even ticket bicyclists for disobeying traffic ordinances. (2 JANUARY 2005)
