Will the madness never end?

Some American hunters want to designate stray domestic cats as legal prey for holders of small-game licenses.

Free-roaming household felines without collars would be fair targets, according to a proposal up for April 11 ratification by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress.

Dane County Friends of Ferals, which has trapped and neutered some 6,000 homeless cats since 2001, opposes the proposal.

Unlike dogs, which can be corralled by fences and sanctioned for trespassing on private property, tabbies traditionally have been allowed to roam at will without legal restraint.

Wisconsin plinkers ought to instead concentrate on eradicating vermin, a real health hazard and the mousers’ food of choice for thousands of years. (13 MARCH 2005)
