Which American state dominates news columns and air time with bizarre events?

No, not California. Florida.

Consider Elian Gonzales, the murder of designer Gianni Versace, Dubya’s 2000 election fiasco, multiple catastrophic hurricanes, alligator invasions, horrendous child slayings and now, the Terri Schiavo case—to name a few.

But wait. Buried on Page D-30, next to the obituaries, is another Florida eye-opener.

Seems an over-zealous Fort Lauderdale police officer this week actually arrested and handcuffed a medical physician for driving 10 miles over the speed limit while rushing to deliver a baby.

Fortunately, the officer drove the still-cuffed doctor to the hospital after learning no one else was available to handle the emergency. The baby was delivered 15 minutes later.

Officer Numbnuts now faces a 16-day unpaid suspension for “conduct prejudicial and/or disruptive to the good order of the department.”

And, yes, Doc still faces a traffic citation. (3 APRIL 2005)
