E-mail attachments aren’t the only curses of cyberspace.

Your computer desktop someday may host an unwanted tenant—a full-screen warning of a dangerous “virus” in your system.

The “virus” and desktop warning will only go away if you purchase a specific spyware program. There are no other removal options except a full-scale systematic search and scouring of the harddrive.

Seems the electronic predator automatically enters your computer if you click “no” on one of those obnoxious pop-up offers.

Don’t click any responses or other parts of those ads. Both “no” and “yes” will load the viral genie.

According to information technicians, the only way to avoid such infections is to hit the “X” (close) button in the upper right-hand corner of the pop-up.

While unwanted commercial spam has been the target of ineffective state and federal prohibitions, the hijacking of personal and business computers is a form of international terrorism and should be addressed with greater vigor. (26 JUNE 2005)
