One of those irritating car alarms got its deserved reward recently—death by three fatal wounds from a 9-mm semiautomatic pistol at a California apartment complex.

Unfortunately, the shooter who silenced the after-hours honking and screeching in a neighbor’s vehicle wound up in jail for alleged felony vandalism and gross negligence.

No word on whether the alarm’s owner was cited for noise violation, disturbing the peace, creating a public nuisance or possessing a faulty security device.

Hey, many municipalities have ordinances allowing fines against property owners when their burglar alarms summon police to false intrusions.

How many times have you witnessed car alarms waking up the dead with no one nearby?

Who pays attention anymore to the horns and flashing lights? Nobody.

Then there are those electronic voices: “Warning, do not come near this vehicle.”

Up yours. (28 AUGUST 2005)
