Flip-flops should be banned from public use.

No, not the changing of positions on issues. The clogs, the shower shoes, the coolie sandals.

You find the ugly, noisy gizmos in every formal venue: school, store, office—name it.

No-shoes, no-service bans should apply to flip-flops. They may accompany feet, but they don’t cover them.

And therein lies the rub:

Shoes protect the feet; flip-flops don’t. Shoes trap odors; flip-flops don’t. Shoes keep athlete’s feet and other diseases from spreading; flip-flops don’t.

But the real hit on flip-flops is their inherent clumsiness: Wearers risk flipping or flopping on their stupid butts. (16 JULY 2006)
