You’ve heard of federal “sin” taxes on liquor and tobacco products.

Now an American Medical Assn. committee wants “thin” taxes on sugar-laced soft drinks—with proceeds going to anti-obesity efforts.

Good idea, but why stop with beverages? Tax every food product containing refined sugars.

You don’t find refined sugar just in candies, ice creams and baked goods. Think dairy products, baby foods, fruit juices, dressings, sauces and canned fruits and vegetables.

Want proof? Just look at the nutritional labels required on all prepared foods.

Refined sugar is a poison because it causes or may cause diseases. Its calories are empty and, like narcotics, it provides only a temporary buzz of energy.

Taxation is a Splenda® idea. (6 AUGUST 2006)
