School districts increasingly have to ban inappropriate student garb:

Hats, visible underwear, bare midriffs, sagging pants, ripped jeans, spike-studded bracelets and collars, spaghetti-strap tops, see-through clothing, mini-skirts and shirt slogans promoting illegal activities.

Many private and parochial and some public schools ,however, don’t need to take those steps. Why? They require uniforms, that’s why.

Uniforms not only save parents bazillions of dollars in fad purchases, but keep students focused on fundamentals rather than fashions.

Hey, virtually all students already wear uniforms during physical-education classes, sports, band and choir performances. Why not the rest of the school day?

If jails can make male inmates wear pink underwear, schools can make students wear decent duds and sensible shoes. Period. (17 SEPTEMBER 2006)
