If it looks like a gangsta, it’s a gangster.

Reason enough for schools to ban appearances and behaviors that emulate the dregs of society.

No one accuses educational institutions of political incorrectness for dumping on wannabe hoodlums and hookers.

But Don Imus, popular radio and cable-TV shock jock, isn’t a school. He’s been grounded for saying African-American members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team looked like “nappy-headed hos” with tattoos.

Hey, emulating the styles of ghetto hustlers has its legitimate consequences—in this case, fair comment and criticism.

Negative fan reactions prompted the National Basketball Assn. to mandate the elimination of gang attire on team personnel at official events.

The National Collegiate Athletic Assn. should do the same. (15 APRIL 2007)
