Labradors Win 'Canine of Century'

Since winter holidays traditionally inspire seasonal serenity, this essay concentrates on the essence of laid back: the mellow yellow, black and chocolate Labrador retriever.

The breed of choice for guide dogs, search and rescue, drug detection and hunting, the Lab really earns the title of Man's Best Friend. Its temperament, friendliness, playfulness, gentleness, adaptability and intelligence also make it the clear choice for Canine of the Century.

Not only is the Lab the most popular breed in America, it is official mascot of the prestigious Harry Higgens Foundation Society--known for its dogged search for truth, justice and the American way.

Why single out Labs?

While all dogs go to heaven, a special celestial niche awaits the yellow Lab that saved a teenage girl from drowning in an Oregon lake a few years ago. The Lab, blind with cataracts, heard the girl scream for help and swam to her rescue.

That's just one reason why. (12 DECEMBER 1999).
