Football’s latest contribution to American culture—sponsorship of deadly dog fights—isn’t a departure from the norm.

After all, pig-skinners frequently bite off the heads of live chickens to stimulate blood lust before games.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was indicted this week for allegedly violating federal laws against staging dog fights, gambling and other interstate crimes.

His business, Bad Newz Kennels, allegedly routinely electrocuted, hanged, drowned and shot underperforming pit bulls and other large breeds.

Federal agents in April seized nearly 70 live dogs, a number of dog carcasses and dog-fighting equipment from Vick’s Virginia property.

Vick and three co-defendants face up to six years in prison and $350,000 in fines if convicted. The National Football League, Falcons owners and Nike haven’t suspended or fired him as a player and promoter.

All dogs go to heaven. And all fighters of dogs go to hell. (22 JULY 2007)
