All you need to get into the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology are brains and knowledge.

But not common sense.

Just ask Star Simpson, a 19-year-old sophomore in electrical engineering and another prime candidate for 2007 Idiot of the Year.

She wore her Career Day “art project” to Boston’s Logan International Airport last week. Unfortunately, her black hooded sweat shirt featured a white circuit board with battery-powered lights and she held Play-Doh in her hands.

Simpson, a resident of Hawaii, wasn’t able to meet her friend arriving from Oakland, Calif. Instead Simpson met with several state troopers armed with submachine guns.

If she had not followed orders to stop, raise her hands and make no furtive moves, Simpson would have been pulverized rather than just charged with disturbing the peace and possessing a hoax device.

Overreaction?

Duh. Logan Airport, if you remember, was where airliners were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists and used in two of the four attacks on 9/11.

This star has little brightness. (30 SEPTEMBER 2007)
