Students feel the squeeze as America’s schools embrace zero tolerance to hugging and other public displays of affection.

No spontaneous touching, no single or groups hugs, even no high-fives are allowed in some schools and districts responding to a 1999 U.S. Supreme Court decision.

That ruling found school districts liable for damages in cases involving peer sexual harassment. Educators, naturally, overreacted.

Offending students in all grade levels have been slapped with warnings, detentions and even suspensions for innocent touchie-feelies.

Sanctioned touching, on the other hand, is encouraged in school sports: wrestling, football, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse.

And don’t forget the traditional butt slaps in locker rooms. (11 NOVEMBER 2007)
