Give ‘em a hack, give ‘em a hack.

Ah, the great old meaningful cheers at football games before the yells were declared unsportsmanlike.

You mean engaging in brutal body contact designed to break bones and concuss brains is sportsmanlike?

Adding to the cultural confusion is a growing official distain for the delightful choreographed showmanship of team haka during pre-game ceremonies.

Haka is the traditional postured dance form of warriors from New Zealand’s indigenous Maori tribe of Polynesians. It is now a worldwide phenom.

Shouts, directed at foes, are accompanied by stomping, crouching, sneering, teeth-baring, grunting and sumo frog-squatting.

Sports authorities are busy assessing penalties for such displays, describing them as unsportsmanlike taunting of opponents.

Duh. At least haka doesn’t send opponents to the sidelines and hospitals with crippling or life-threatening injuries. (25 NOVEMBER 2007)
