You rent cars, tools, beach umbrellas.

And when you take them back, no problemos, no broken hearts. Right?

But you don’t rent dogs by the hour, day, week or year. You only adopt them, buy them, rescue them. Right?

Wrong. Flexpetz, a business on both American coasts, uses dogs from animal shelters for temporary liaisons with humans for $45 daily.

The company says renters are carefully vetted and instructed, that the ultimate goal is to eventually find the animals good homes.

You ever been jailed in an animal shelter? Try sitting in a cell watching potential owners adopting cuter inmates while you wait to walk the last mile.

But the Flexpetz experience would be even worse:

Some really nice human puts you on a leash and takes you bye-bye. But after a day, week or month of treats and walks, the party ends. You’re back in dog stir.

Don’t do this to man’s best friend. (6 APRIL 2008)
