Invoke the federal Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 if you want to tame landlords, other property owners and public conveyances.

Well, not tame literally. More like circumvent.

Seems that tenants, customers and passengers can now take pets into personal domiciles, stores and commercial transporters without official certification or “guide” trappings as proof.

Tenants merely say that their pets were prescribed by medical physicians as emotional support to counter depression or other ailments.

Store owners and transportation providers can ask if the animal is for service, but also can’t ask for documentation if the answer is “yes.”

Most landlords, store personnel and transporters don’t ask any questions, fearing lawsuits, fines and other penalties permitted in the legislation.

And the “working” pets don’t have to be canine or feline. Gila monsters, horn toads, parrots, rabbits, rats and miniature horses do just as well. (1 JUNE 2008)
