Expect bicycles to crowd America’s streets and highways as gasoline approaches $5 a gallon.

And expect traffic accidents also to increase--especially head-on collisions between two-wheel and four-wheel vehicles.

That’s because most novice cyclists choose to pedal against traffic, rather than with traffic as rules of the road mandate.

Bikes are vehicles and their riders must obey all laws regarding traffic flow, signals, signs and other controls.

But wrong-way cyclists still cling to the old pedestrian rule: Travel against traffic.

Tragically, those boneheads give the same advice to their children riding bikes and trikes.

You never see traffic cops ticketing wrong-way riders of any age. Or courts siding with the errant mangled cyclists or their survivors. (6 JULY 2008)
