Republicans just turned the 2008 presidential campaign into a real moose race.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the presumptive GOP nominee, has selected 44-year-old Alaska Gov. Sarah Louise Palin as his running mate.

Who? The former two-term councilwoman and mayor of Wasilla (pop. 6,500), a suburb of Anchorage, that’s who.

Palin, a mother of five, was elected governor two years ago and gained attention for publicizing ethical violations by state GOP leaders and other reform efforts.

She will give some of the 18 million disaffected feminist supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) an excuse to vote Republican in November.

McCain’s veep choice, a hunter and pro-lifer, has a soldier son about to deploy to Iraq and an infant son who has Down’s Syndrome.

Say goodbye to the status quo in American politics. Say hello to the most exciting presidential race in American history. (31 AUGUST 2008)
