U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is the political dumbass of the 2008 campaign.
The first-term legislator and GOP national spokeswoman once opposed energy-efficient light bulbs. Now she wants the news media to do a “penetrating expose and (find out if) the people in Congress…are pro-American or anti-American.”
Her remarks mimic other Republican screeds that Democrats and liberals are Socialists and Communists.
Shades of the 1950s, when Sen. Joe McCarthy (R-Wisc.) and members of the House Un-American Activities Committee believed Reds were under every bed.
They caused thousands of innocent persons to lose or fear the loss of their livelihoods because of alleged un-American beliefs or associations.
This time, the chickens have come home to roost.
Bachmann’s Democratic challenger has received $1 million in windfall campaign contributions and the Republican National Committee has stopped its financial support for Bachmann.
