If Pulitzer Prizes were awarded for children's literature, Go, Dog. Go! by Philip D. Eastman would have won going away when it debuted in 1961.

Part of the Dr. Seuss Beginner Books series, the 64-page Random House hardback still is delighting children and adults 39 years later.

Go, Dog. Go! exquisitely blends words and cartoon animals to teach about size, color, social communication, movement, position, distance, work, play, traffic courtesy, sleep and partying.

Canines, of course, are the book's sole characters--overwhelmingly fun-loving retriever and hound types with token numbers of poodles and dachshunds for political correctness.

Hailed by elementary teachers and reading specialists, Go, Dog. Go! and other classic Eastman titles such as Are You My Mother? are even being used to effectively introduce English to immigrants of all ages.

Eastman and Theodor Seuss Geisel liberated generations of children from the bland literary worlds of Dick, Jane and Spot. Go, Dog. Go! (5 MARCH 2000).
