Believe only Brits drive on the left side of the road?

Think again. Fully 75 countries need vehicles with steering wheels on the right side.

Samoa (formerly Western Samoa) recently joined the list. American Samoa (formerly Eastern Samoa) is one of l65 nations and territories still driving in the right lane.

Think of the hundreds (perhaps thousands) of pedestrian tourists who have died after looking the wrong way before stepping off curbs.

And think of the hundreds (perhaps thousands) of motoring tourists who have died in head-on collisions after driving on the wrong side of the road.

You’d think rental and insurance companies would aggressively lobby for international uniformity in traffic laws.

Too late for that. Americans would say “our way or the highway” to lane-change proposals.

Hey, why not compromise? Convince the world’s manufacturers to produce only vehicles with center steering.

That provides a whole new meaning to “middle of the road.” (27 SEPTEMBER 2009)
