As if motorists needed another distraction.

Huge billboards and moving electronic signs already vie for attention on America's highways.

And nevermind the ringtones of cell phones and ear-splitting wails and thumps of so-called contemporary music.

Marketing mavens now are erecting road signs that emit the grilled charcoal smell of a new line of meat sold by a grocery advertizer in North Carolina.

The manufacturer of fragrance-delivery systems for casinos and other venues uses a high-powered fan to blow air over cartridges of black pepper and fragrance oil simulating barbequed steak.

Pepper? The stuff that can blind and incapacitate people when used in defensive sprays?

What the hell do they spray in in gaming spaces to influence gamblers? Hemp, perhaps?

Expect to see salivating motorists in your neighborhood any day now. (6 JUNE 2010)
