Commercial Patriotism

Any federal legislation or proposed constitutional amendment to protect the United States flag from desecration must include outright bans on commercial exploitations of Old Glory.

Exploitation of the U.S. flag is rampant in America.

The U.S. flag can be found on packaging, labels, advertising and literature for every imaginable product and service.

What happened to the federal regulations specifically outlining approved displays and representations of the flag?

The present indiscriminate use of the U.S. flag for any sales or promotional motive is the real root of the problem.

In other words, if businesses now can wrap themselves in Old Glory without legal or criminal sanctions, how can we then object to other political and artistic abuses of the flag and other national symbols? (28 MAR 99)
