Unemployment stubbornly stays at 9.5 percent and America still celebrates some fruitcake who flamboyantly quits his job.

True, distributing nuts and pillows at 31,000 feet above sea level isn't everyone's idea of meaningful work. But it pays reasonably well--at least better than unemployment insurance.

Or at least it did until JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater had a hissy fit, verbally abused a passenger, grabbed two beers, activated an emergency slide and coasted down to freedom on the tarmac at New York's Kennedy Airport.

He now faces multiple criminal counts after posting $2,500 bail. Thousands of dollars from his Facebook fans are now flowing into a legal-defense fund.

Apparently Slater didn't want to hear any more passenger complaints about flight delays, poor leg room, dirty restrooms, baggage charges, security checks, lost baggage and surly service.

Not to worry. Slater has a boyfriend who will probably support him while he looks for new work as a hairstylist, florist, potter, landscaper or male escort. (15 AUGUST 2010)
