Many businesses spend big bucks to attract the prime consumer demographic: 17- to 25-year-olds.

But other businesses now are likely to spend big bucks to discourage those young persons.

Many stores have invested in "The Mosquito" machines that emit high-frequency sounds annoying to loitering teens and young adults.

Especially scruffy punks and gang members who intimidate older paying patrons.

Most persons older than 30 can't hear the screeching throbs because of aging ears. Dogs don't appear to notice either.

The Mosquito joins ranks with other proven methods to bug unwanted youths: playing classical music on public-address systems and installing drip systems to keep loiterers from sitting or sleeping on sidewalks.
