Citizenship bestows only a few rights not enjoyed by noncitizens:

Serving on juries, working for government agencies, qualifying for standard tuition rates.

And, yes, voting in local, state and national elections.

But wait. Republican legislatures in 14 states have successfully imposed new "poll taxes" to inhibit voting by minorities, students and other "undesirable" citizens (Democrats).

The "taxes" are fees charged by state governments for official photo ID cards now necessary to cast ballots--deemed necessary to prevent "voter fraud."

Nevermind that only a few cases of voter fraud have been identified, much less successfully prosecuted.

Millions of voters now have been disenfranchised--just enough to tip the election balance to Republicans in several key states.

And you thought Republicans only believe in preventing fair taxation, choice, separation of church and state, birth control, stem-cell research, gay marriage and military service. (6 NOVEMBER 2011)
