He's not a deliberate Anglophile. No way.

Sure, he puts horseradish on well-done beef and malt vinegar on fish and chips and other favorite foods.

He smokes dusky English tobacco in Canadian-style pipes and occasionally drinks gin cocktails and smooth and creamy pub ale. Of course he has a handlebar moustache and sometimes wears jodhpur boots and sports coats with elbow patches.

His ties have Windsor knots and he prefers trench coats on misty mornings and safari jackets while walking in the noonday sun with his Labrador retriever.

He chuckles at droll jokes, BBC comedies and the quirky humor of Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness and Dudley Moore. He spends his retirement guarding the English language.

He once owned MG and Austin-Healy roadsters and served in the navy reserve. He also was a soccer organizer, referee and coach.

He's not an Anglophile. He's an Anglofied American. (28 MAY 2000)
