Only one wish for the new year:

The Federal Communications Commission or U.S. attorney general--someone--will go after deceptive broadcast advertising.

Namely the vehicle-insurance providers that claim to save customers hundreds of dollars when switching coverage from other providers.

The other providers, of course, make the same claim.

They avoid criminal charges by deliberately using a few "straw men," individuals who receive deep discounts below market rates to "prove" the advertising claims.

Thousands who seek the advertised savings, however, are offered service extras rather than lower rates.

Discounts, if any, are tied to mandatory bundling of other insurance needs: life, liability, homeowner or renter, etc.

Remember that the next time you're exposed to the gecko, Flo or that geek with a microphone. (1 JANUARY 2012)
