What is it about Arizona that produces such glaring contrasts between tenderness and bitterness?

First you see President Obama embracing gravely wounded Democratic Congresswoman Gabby Giffords as she resigned her Arizona seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Then you see Republican Jan Brewer, governor of Arizona, waving an angry finger in the face of President Obama during his brief visit to Phoenix.

Gov. Brewer, who once pulled the plug on state funding for impoverished individuals needing organ transplants, also signed legislation preemptively targeting Latinos suspected of being illegal immigrants.

The federal government, led by President Obama, has successfully opposed some of that legislation in court.

Which pisses off Gov. Brewer, who appears to be terminally constipated about everything that benefits the downtrodden masses.

When Gabby Giffords eventually recovers fully, let's hope she succeeds Brewer and returns compassion to the state capitol. (29 JANUARY 2012)
