And the cause is a new version of the hallacinogen, LSD.
Commonly called "bath salts," the street drug caused 31-year-old Rudy Eugene to strip naked and consume the face of Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man in Miami.
Poppo is in critical condition after losing his nose, mouth and eyes. Eugene is dead, shot to death by police after he refused to halt his dining experience.
Police and trauma specialists say other psychotic episodes linked to the amphetamine-like drug have spiked during the past year.
Meanwhile, in a related story, the hit television series, The Walking Dead, is shooting more episodes based in America's zombie-rich southern states.
