Educators jumping off the deep end to enforce rules against "weapons" in school.

Hearing-impaired students in a Grand Island, Neb. public school use American Sign Language to communicate.

When preschooler Hunter Spanjer signs his given name, his hand forms a finger pistol.

Administrators want him to modify his name because its signing motions violate a school-district policy of zero tolerance toward guns.

Hunter and his parents simply shake their heads.

The three-year-old deaf student has received support from the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Assn. of the Deaf.

Perhaps taxpayerrs should insist that "common sense" be one of the methods courses required for education majors.
