Americans revere animals--especially dogs and horses.

We condemn Asian and African countries for allowing dogs to be bred and slaughtered for food.

We long ago closed slaughterhouses specializing in processing horsemeat for domestic or foreign consumption by humans.

Trigger, Silver, Mister Ed and wild mustangs are American icons--not specialties of the day in gourmet steakhouses.

But wait.

Commercial slaughterhouses are now applying to the U.S. Dept of Agriculture for permission to process horsemeat for human consumption overseas.

They want to reopen plants to package meat frequently laced with equine drugs toxic to humans.

They want to kill decendants of four-legged pioneers in America's western frontier. (25 NOVEMBER 2012)
