American Assn. of Retired Persons (AARP), the humungous organization for seniors, has stuck its finger in the eye of literacy.

Its monthly magazine dropped the traditional crossword for some obscene puzzle called sudoku.

While it allegedly exercises the brain, sudoku doesn't build vocabularies or strengthen recall abilities.

Most seniors with time on their hands fill the void with crosswords rather than surf the Internet, tweet friends or share inane dialog on Facebook.

Or, for that matter, rearrange nine numbers in consecutive order vertically and horizontally to conquer sudoku.

Even its name conjures up visions of import sedans or hostile Asian monsters.

What does sudoku mean? Who the hell cares?(2 DECEMBER 2012)
