Baseball, football and basketball aren't America's greatest pastimes.

Soccer--the world's game--is.

True. Soccer is America's most-popular team sport, far outdrawing all others in numbers of participants (18.l million in 1997, according to the Soccer Industry Council of America).

Small wonder. Soccer is played indoors and outdoors year-round by both genders ranging in age from five-year-olds to senior citizens.

Soccer teams might be coed, adult, challenged, youth, school, college, semi-professional or professional.

American soccer has been around for about 100 years, but didn't turn on its afterburner until the mid-1970s. That's when youth organizations took the sport nationwide.

Soccer doesn't need tons of equipment, specially groomed playing surfaces, outrageous insurance premiums and players of certain physical characteristics.

Just two goalmouths, a ball, two teams of up to 11 players each and one official.

Soccer, aerobically perfect.(30 JULY 2000)
