Homely Abraham Lincoln wouldn't stand a chance today with Republican Party kingmakers and focus groups.

That's because today's politics is just as shallow as high-school electioneering: all about appearance and popularity, nothing about substance.

Ronald Reagan was elected California governor in 1966 and President of the United States in 1980 only because of his Silver Screen celebrity status.

Dan Quayle was selected as George H.W. Bush's veep running mate in 1988 because Bush needed female votes and Quayle looked like actor Robert Redford.

Presidential nominee George Dubya Bush was annointed by party cynics this season because he looks like Quayle with a squint and Texas drawl.

Dubya rides a Trojan horse, of course. The GOP hopes women will vote their hormones and forget he'd strangle reproductive choice at the drop of a stetson.

And the only real issue of substance in 2000--campaign-finance reform--isn't even a minor part of Dubya's programming.(6 AUGUST 2000)
