Gran joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Parramatta, NSW, Australia on the 26th Nov 1976. She was a faithful member as long as her health permitted. She sent me money on my mission for the Church, which sometimes saved us from`starvation.’ – or so we thought on those off weeks.
Gran was good at knitting and crocheting and made lots of baby clothes and doilies. She especially made pretty pansy doillies. She also crocheted dresses mum and I often wore them back in the 1970s.
Gran virtually lived with us or near us all our lives. She lived behind us when we were in Barrymede drive, with us at North Rd, then again when we came to Australia. Gran and Grandad arrived in 1969.

Notes for Arthur Walter BERRY: Arthur could be classed as the black sheep of the family as he was a bit of a womaniser and was off seeing Mrs Doreen Kelly (whom he later married) when his wife Gladys was dying. He died suddenly one night in January when I was visiting England. He was crippled with arthritis. He gave me some photos and also some brass from his time in India as a soldier. I have a photo marked on the back ` Dear Gladys, this photo was taken in the compound near our bungalow. Nasurabad, India July 5th 1919.'He worked for many years in Whickham and Norris in Bristol as a sawyer. He was the fifth generation sawyer.
I went to his funeral. He was cremated and I took the cards from the flowers at the cremetorium. Apparantly he dated Gladys from when she was a young girl. Her parents were not particularly fond of him.
I interviewed him once - shortly before he died. I had made arrangements to visit him on a Monday night but there was a show I wanted to watch on TV so I didn't stay long, saying I'd come back on Saturday. He died during the week and I attended his funeral instead!!
These are some of the points I learnt about him from his life.
He worked for 61years at Wickham and Norris as a sawyer. He was born in Easton and went to Christchurch College and was one of the Christchurch Angels(choir). He used to stay with Aunt Matty (Joy) He mentioned a Harry Dommett (an uncle to Gran married into his mother's side) He lived in Lime Rd, Ashton before School. The Joys lived in Ambrose Rd and he (Abraham) was a coachman to Dr Fox. Grandad's family lived with the Joys when Arthur and Janet were babies. Uncle Harry (Knowle) and family were Oak Chapel people (Methodist) . Oak Chapel Hill, Dowes Sq, Hotwells Rd.
Matty was youngest and ran the Prince of Wales Pub.
In 1916 Arthur went to India to fight in the war. More to write

Notes for Gladys Madeline SIMMONS:
I interveiwed Aunty Maud and Aunty Vi about their early days as a family and about Gladys. This is a word perfect conversation:
'I remember when we lived up in Portland Street in Clifton near Victoria Street. I remember Grandfather Simmons when he was alive. He died when we were young down in Gathorne Rd, that was our dad's father, wasn't it. And Aunty Lois like that was her daughter, she had a love child. Edith Simmons she went to Canada and she had 3 children and they got on very well in Canada and he was a mayor of Saskatchewan. They met in London. Our Aunt Flo had her up like she did our Glad and dressed her up like, and she got on very well there she went into service and met a young fellow and he was here and went across to Canada like.. Glad went to London and stayed with Aunt Flo, and Aunt Flo dressed her up and put her into service see and of course she was ever such a quiet girl like in them days and she was broken hearted so mother said could she get somewhere else and she said no, she would stay there to be brought up well and she cried when she came home and when she came home an old womans long dress on, in them days like and all she was dressed up like an old woman and it upset our mum terrible. Because our Glad was rather a nice looking girl wasn't she. She had beautiful hair. She was the reserved one of the family. She used to have a beautiful Sunday dress that she'd never wear in the week, our Beat used to wear it in the week. Our Beat did take it and our Dor would take her clothes. It was a bit of a shame wasn't it. She was so proud about it like our Glad was. Her doeskin clothes had to be just so while Beattie comes out clicking she had to wear it. She came home one night with her (Glad's) hat, wuddn't it, her it had cherries on it and the rain caused all the red to run on it. Poor Glad she was so upset. They were so cheeky they just took it for granted that they could wear her clothes. Just because she was nice and kept them for herself. She was the reserved one of the family. She followed our mum though. Our mum used to keep us on 14 shillings a week -that's ten of us.
