Kanchanaburi 2000

Post office in Na Muang

This marks my second trip here to Kanchanaburi Province . This time around , the weather wasn't as pleasant as before , with daytime temperatures hovering around the high 30's as well as the high humidity to contend with . Anyway , the place is still the same as before , just that i visited some new tourist attractions and re-visited some i've been before . Look out for the signpost in the shape of a fish in the picture above . It's the local fish.

Old City Gate

On the first day , we were led to Wat Tham Seua Temple which to get to it , you either pay 10 baht to sit on a cable car which leads you to the top or you walk up a long flight of stairs . I chose the latter . It proved to be a rather taxing walk up . At the top , there are actually a few temples where you can walk in to pray and there are also bells which you can choose to toil with sticks provided . There is a large statue of a Buddha with a conveyor belt in front of it carrying along with it glasses of oil . The view from the top is pretty scenic . You can see mountains and rivers in the distance . If only the sun were less glaring . On the way down the other way which goes through an aviary , we entered a cave in which were several Buddhist statues.

Next on the itinerary was the Jeath War Museum which i've been before so i shan't say too much about it . Thereafter , we headed for the Bridge Over River Kwai which is just the same as before . However i gotta mention that the tourist police was very friendly and obliging in acceding to our requests for a photo . Then there was a Thai tour guide who actually thought that we were Thai Chinese !!! Now if only that translates into better bargains.

The next morning , we set off relatively early for the Buphloi Safari Park . Upon reaching there , we were all herded onto a bus which wound through the safari grounds . Along the way , various animals came up to our bus hoping that we'll give them food . The animals are partitioned into their varied species , something like Jurassic Park if you get the drift , whereby you enter one enclosure when the last enclosure shuts its gates . Some of the animal species found here include giraffes , lions , tigers , llamas , deers , bisons , zebras , camels among others . One interesting point i noted is that whenever our bus enters the enclosure , the workers would try to drive the animals to vantage spots from which we could see them closer . It's interesting but i think the park is far too small . The ride was over before we knew it . And frankly besides the ride through the animal enclosures , this park has little else going for it . The buffet we had was far from wonderful with little variety to choose from . The souvenir shop also offers a paltry selection of goods . A lot of work needs to be done to enable it to become a major tourist attraction.

Buphloi Safari Park

Next up was the Rose Garden Country Resort which i've been before . Entrance fee is 300 Baht . We were all led straight to the Thai Village . However as i've watched the cultural show before , i left after a while and headed to a air rifle shooting range nearby . As it was cheap , i decided to try my hand at it . The price was 40 baht for 10 pellets , but there was only 1 type of rifle unlike the range i been to in Bangkok . Nonetheless it was still quite fun . Then after that we headed towards Rose Garden Hotel for a drink and it served as a respite from the sweltering heat outside . After a short rest , with our batteries charged , we headed outside intending to hit the streets . Boy , it was hard trying to figure a way outta Rose Garden . The security guards told us that there was a supermarket nearby and we headed in the supposed direction but after walking for some time , we still couldn't find the supermarket so we headed back to Rose Garden again.

After dinner at Whale Hotel somewhere in Ratchaburi (i think) , we headed towards Big 'C' Shopping Centre which is a suburban shopping mall tucked in the middle of , should i say nowhere ? Alright , there's a disco opposite the shopping centre . Nothing much to rave about here so i shan't say much too . Spent 15 minutes surfing the internet , checking my emails , wondering about the mall rather aimlessly . This spot also marks the end of my tour in Kanchanaburi.

Alright , let's talk about the people in general . This time around , i've encountered a wonderful reception from the people . Almost everyone i met was friendly and obliging . (I'm referring to the locals here) . This lends credence to Thailand's claim as the Land Of Smiles and has also given me a favourable impression of Thailand .
