I never knew I'd have a place to call home.
That one special place that could make me cry when I say goodbye
Well I found it on my country road, down in West Virginia
Where we all sing in harmony
I felt I belonged
Feelings like that can never be wrong.
Wishing upon that shooting star
I found the church that can take me home
farther down that country road
And remember I once wished to be taken home
and found it right here.
I imagine with every campfire ember
A picture of the perfect clear night and the shooting stars.
I made wishes on those embers
Same as back in West Virginia
Well my wishes came true and
I'm home to aplace I belong
Back on country roads,
Searching for some melodies.
A little history behind this poem...
West Virginia is a reference to the song "Country Roads" by John Denver, which I learned for the first while I was in Ishigaki, Japan. I sang it with my host sister, Mami, and became our little song. Ever since then the song has reminded me of Japan and the great place I stayed. Ishigaki became my home, so in this case West Virginia = Ishigaki. I wrote this when I realized that I found a place a bit closer to call home in my small group at camp. We were a tight group of people whom we shared great times and bonded really well. This one's for them (=
